Description

A charming antique rural watercolour attributed to M. Haughton, depicting a solitary figure within a traditional farmyard landscape.

The atmospheric composition shows a woman standing before a farmhouse and outbuildings, with rustic fencing, mature trees and a softly rendered landscape extending into the distance. Executed in a restrained palette of sepia, olive and muted grey tones, the work has the quiet character of an early 19th-century Georgian country scene.

The mount is inscribed “M. Haughton, 1800.” The watercolour is presented beneath glass with a layered mount and an antique gilt wooden frame.

A characterful period work ideal for a traditional interior, country cottage, study or collection of antique rural and topographical art.

Condition

The watercolour displays considerable age-related toning, fading, spotting and discolouration consistent with an antique work on paper. The mount has staining, foxing and general wear. The artwork is housed beneath glass, which may produce reflections in the photographs.

The gilt wooden frame has rubbing, scratches, cracks, small losses and areas of exposed wood. The reverse covering is heavily aged, torn and partially missing, with an older hanging cord attached.
