J.S. Gill

A charming and highly decorative Victorian British School oil painting by J.S. Gill (British, fl. 1847–1862) depicting a peaceful rural scene of a farmer driving cattle and horses through a shallow river crossing.

The composition beautifully captures everyday agricultural life, with a white horse drinking from the ford, a brown working horse harnessed to a cart, ducks gathered in the foreground, and rolling countryside stretching into the distance beneath mature woodland. The fine detail, balanced composition and warm natural palette make this an attractive example of mid-19th century British landscape painting.

The painting is monogrammed lower right and is presented in an impressive ornate gilt frame with an engraved artist’s plaque.

A wonderful decorative antique for a traditional, country house or farmhouse interior.
