A charming 19th-century English School portrait of a lady in a blue dress, painted in oil on canvas.

The sitter is elegantly portrayed wearing a striking blue dress decorated with delicate circular motifs, lace-trimmed cuffs and collar, and a prominent cream-coloured bow. The dark background creates a strong contrast with the sitter and draws attention to her face and elaborate costume.

Condition

The painting is in antique condition consistent with age. There is visible age-related craquelure across the painted surface, together with surface marks and areas of darkening/aging to the varnish. The reverse shows signs of age and wear to the canvas/support. The antique frame also has age-related wear, marks and losses consistent with its considerable age.

By descent within the family of the present vendor, possibly a portrait of their great-grandmother.
