A striking 19th-century English School portrait of a gentleman, painted in oil on panel.

The sitter is depicted half-length against a dark, atmospheric background, wearing a dark coat with a high white neckcloth. The restrained palette and expressive treatment of the face give the portrait a particularly characterful and intimate appearance.

Condition

The painting is offered in antique condition and displays significant age-related wear and restoration.

There are significant abrasion marks to the paint layer, particularly in the area immediately above the sitter’s head, with additional abrasion marks scattered throughout the composition. The colour pigments have discoloured to some degree over time, and there is visible overpaint, particularly within the background and around the sitter’s shoulders.

Two visible cracks are present in the paint layer around the sitter’s nose.

The antique frame has significant losses to the gilt finish and remains fragile, with areas of age-related wear and damage. The frame is included with the painting and should be handled with appropriate care.
