Description
After Justus Sustermans (1597–1681) – Portrait of Vittoria della Rovere, Grand Duchess of Tuscany
An impressive antique oil painting depicting Vittoria della Rovere (1622–1694), Grand Duchess of Tuscany, portrayed wearing an elegant dark gown adorned with pearl embellishments and decorative bows.
The composition reflects the refined court portraiture associated with the Florentine artistic tradition of the 17th century. The sitter is presented against a dark background, with particular attention given to her delicate facial features, elaborate jewellery and richly decorated attire.
The painting is described as after Justus Sustermans (1597–1681), the Flemish-born painter renowned for his portraits of the Medici family and the aristocracy of Renaissance and Baroque Tuscany.
The reverse of the canvas bears a handwritten inscription identifying the sitter as Vittoria della Rovere, Grand Duchess of Tuscany, together with a reference to Florence and the date 1913. An additional inscription reads “Visto il Sovraintendente D. Bermolini” (as transcribed from the reverse). These inscriptions provide interesting historical details and are included as part of the painting’s provenance-related features; their authenticity and precise meaning have not been independently verified.
The painting is presented in an elaborate decorative frame featuring a distinctive carved, rounded moulding and an ornate dark ground with gilt decoration. The frame complements the portrait beautifully and enhances its traditional European character.
An appealing piece for collectors of antique portraiture, Italian art, Medici history and classical interiors.
