An attractive early 19th-century English School watercolour portrait of an elegantly dressed lady, signed with the initials R. G. and dated 1832 at the lower left.

The sitter is depicted with her dark hair arranged in fashionable ringlets, wearing drop earrings, a necklace and a high-collared period dress with a softly rendered shawl. The delicate monochrome and muted wash technique gives the portrait a refined and intimate character typical of early Victorian and late Georgian portraiture.

Presented behind glass in an ornate gilt wooden frame decorated with raised floral and foliate corner motifs. The substantial antique frame complements the period character of the portrait and makes it a striking decorative display piece.

The reverse bears faint handwritten inscriptions, but they are difficult to read with certainty. The identity of the sitter and the full name of the artist are unknown. No attribution beyond the visible initials and date is being made.

The watercolour displays some age-related toning, light marks and scattered foxing or discolouration to the paper. It is displayed behind glass.

The gilt wooden frame has noticeable age-related wear, including scratches, chips, cracks, small losses and rubbing to the gilt finish. The decorative floral corner mouldings also show some cracking and wear. The reverse has an old backing, hanging wire, handwritten inscriptions and signs of previous repairs or reinforcement.
