Description
An elegant Victorian pencil portrait attributed to Wilhelm August Rudolph Lehmann (1819–1905), depicting Reverend Edward Perowne, the youngest son of the Reverend Perowne family. Executed in 1876, this finely observed half-length portrait demonstrates the refined draughtsmanship for which Lehmann became renowned.
The drawing is executed in pencil with white highlights on paper and remains unsigned, although attributed to the artist. It is presented in an impressive period gilt frame under glass.
A fascinating handwritten inscription on the reverse reads:
“One of a pair formerly in the possession of JTWP probably from his uncle Edward of Corpus – original.”
Further handwritten notes to the reverse identify the sitter as “Reverend Perowne.” These inscriptions provide an interesting historical provenance and accompany the work.
An exceptional portrait with academic, ecclesiastical and Victorian historical interest.
