Emil Lindgren

A beautiful and atmospheric oil on canvas by Emil Lindgren (Swedish, 1866–1940), depicting an elegant lady holding a candle in a softly lit interior.

The painting is signed and dated 1937 to the reverse, adding an interesting element of provenance and dating to the work. The warm palette, expressive handling and candlelit subject create a wonderful early 20th-century Scandinavian atmosphere.

Condition

The painting has an attractive aged appearance consistent with its period. There are examples of pitting within the oil pigment, with a naturally rough texture to the paint surface and evidence of fine age-related craquelure, mainly around the signature.

There appear to be no visible significant losses to the paint layer. Some areas of the colour pigment have yellowed with age, and general surface markings are present. The canvas appears structurally sound.

The ornate frame shows signs of age and wear, including surface marks and areas of finish loss, consistent with its age. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
