Emily Eyres RA

An attractive late 19th-century pastel portrait by Emily Eyres RA (1850–1910) depicting Mrs Isabella Macleod, executed after the famous portrait by Sir Henry Raeburn RA.

The reverse retains an old handwritten label reading:

“Mrs Macleod. Painted in Pastels by E. Eyres after Sir H. Raeburn R.A.”

Emily Eyres was a respected British portrait painter and pastel artist whose works were regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. This charming example beautifully captures the refined elegance associated with Raeburn’s celebrated portraiture while demonstrating Eyres’ delicate handling of pastel.

The sitter is portrayed wearing a soft white dress with a striking violet sash, her gentle expression and luminous complexion standing out beautifully against the dark background. The work is housed in an ornate gilt frame that complements the period character of the portrait.

An excellent decorative piece for traditional, Victorian or country house interiors, and an appealing addition for collectors of British portraiture and Royal Academy artists.

Presented in good antique condition overall.

The pastel remains attractive with good colour. There is some visible surface dirt and marks to the glazing, as shown in the photographs. The ornate gilt frame displays age-related wear, including losses and repairs to the decorative moulding consistent with age.
