A charming early 20th-century British portrait watercolour by Emily Jane Harding Andrews (1850–1940), professionally known as Emily J. Harding.

The work depicts a distinguished gentleman in formal Victorian/Edwardian dress, presented in an attractive oval format. The painting is signed and dated 1914, visible to the lower/right area of the portrait.

Emily Jane Harding Andrews was a British painter and illustrator, particularly noted for her illustrations of children’s books and fairy tales. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and was also associated with the Artists’ Suffrage League, producing artwork and posters supporting women’s suffrage.

This is a lovely example of her portrait work and would make an attractive addition to a collection of British watercolours, Victorian/Edwardian art or works by women artists.

Condition Report

The painting is presented in an attractive period frame with glazing and an oval mount.

The artwork has the expected signs of age, including some light toning/discolouration to the paper. The frame and backing also show age-related wear and marks consistent with its age. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

The reverse retains an interesting original/period framer’s label from Percy Young, Gower Street, London, identifying the business as a picture restorer, mounter and framer.
