Follower of John Hoppner

An impressive 19th Century British School portrait, follower of John Hoppner, depicting a gentleman seated half-length in a dark coat and white cravat.

The sitter is traditionally identified as John Edward Bridge (1819–1888), as indicated by the name plaque attached to the frame. A distant view of a church tower appears beyond the drapery at the right of the composition, adding depth and narrative interest.

Executed in oil on canvas, the portrait displays refined modelling of the sitter’s features, restrained colouring and the formal elegance associated with late Georgian and early 19th-century British portraiture.

The painting is presented in an ornate gilt composition frame. An old auction label on the reverse describes the work as a portrait of John Edward Bridge and notes a companion portrait of his wife, Ellen Eliza.
