Jean Baptiste Greuze C1790

A charming 18th/19th-century oil on canvas portrait of a young lady, presented in an impressive antique giltwood frame.

The sitter is depicted in a softly painted, romantic manner, with her head turned slightly to the side and a gentle, contemplative expression. The restrained palette and delicate treatment of the face give the portrait an elegant Old Master character.

The stretcher bears a handwritten inscription reading “JEANNE BAPTISTE GREUZE C1790” [sic], indicating an attribution to Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805) and a date of circa 1790. This inscription is offered as part of the history/provenance of the work and the attribution has not been independently authenticated.

The painting is housed in a particularly attractive ornately carved giltwood frame with foliate decoration, which complements the portrait beautifully.

Condition

The painting is in good antique condition, commensurate with age. There is evidence of age-related wear and surface marks, with some craquelure and signs of previous handling/restoration visible on close inspection. The canvas and frame show the expected signs of age.

The gilt frame is attractive and decorative, with areas of rubbing, wear and patination consistent with its age.
