Early 18th century / possibly earlier after a 17th century prototype

A finely painted and atmospheric portrait study depicting the profile head of an elderly bearded man, possibly representing an apostle or saint. Executed in the manner of the Northern European Old Masters, the work demonstrates strong chiaroscuro, expressive brushwork and a restrained earthy palette characteristic of Baroque devotional studies.

The sitter is shown in profile against a dark background, his deeply lined features and flowing beard rendered with subtle tonal modelling and painterly texture. The composition recalls Dutch and Flemish school character studies influenced by Rembrandt and his circle.

The painting is executed in oil on paper laid onto canvas and presented in an ornate gilt decorative frame. The reverse shows an old hand-stretched support and age-consistent construction.
