Description

Robert Taylor (British, fl. 1737–1755)

Portrait of the Reverend Hugh Lloyd of Mold

A fine 18th-century British portrait depicting the Reverend Hugh Lloyd of Mold, attributed to Robert Taylor (British, fl. 1737–1755).

The sitter is shown in a dignified half-length portrait, wearing traditional clerical robes and a white clerical collar, against a dark neutral background. The restrained palette and formal composition are characteristic of British portraiture of the period.

Reverend Hugh Lloyd was an 18th-century cleric associated with the town of Mold, Flintshire. He died in September 1749. He was related to the Wynne family of Leeswood and was also connected by family to the celebrated Welsh landscape painter Richard Wilson.

The reverse bears a handwritten identification/provenance note relating to the sitter and painting, adding interesting historical context to the work.

The antique giltwood frame also shows age-related wear, losses, marks and abrasions, consistent with its age.

A particularly interesting portrait for collectors of British 18th-century portraiture, Welsh history, ecclesiastical subjects and works associated with the artistic circle surrounding Richard Wilson
