Description
A distinguished 19th century Scottish School portrait depicting Andrew Belfrage (1776–1853), painted in oil on board and presented within an attractive gilt composition and oak Watts style frame.
The sitter is shown in formal dark attire against a rich dark ground, rendered with strong character and excellent tonal depth. The reverse bears an inscribed label identifying the sitter:
“Andrew Belfrage
Born 1776. Died 1853.
Buried in Colinton Churchyard near Edinburgh.”
An appealing and historically interesting Scottish portrait with excellent decorative presence.
