European School 19th Century Portrait of a Saint Oil on Metal Framed

A charming and characterful European School portrait of a saint, painted in oil on a metal support and presented in an attractive, ornate gilt frame.

The saint is depicted half-length, with a long grey beard and expressive upward-looking gaze, holding a staff or flowering branch. The painting has a traditional devotional character, with strong tonal contrasts and a beautifully aged appearance.

The work is particularly interesting for its oil-on-metal construction, and it is housed in a highly decorative period-style gilt frame with scrolling and foliate ornament.
