A striking original oil painting by British artist Paul Stephens (b.1957) depicting the dramatic landscape of Cheddar Gorge, Somerset.

The painting is executed in a highly expressive and colourful style, with bold, energetic brushwork and a vibrant palette of blues, greens, purples, yellows and reds. The layered application of paint creates a wonderful sense of movement and texture across the rugged gorge and surrounding countryside.

The work is signed lower left and is also signed and titled “Cheddar Gorge” verso.

Importantly, the reverse retains an original Royal Bath & West Show – Art Exhibition Main Show exhibition label, identifying the artist as Paul Stephens, the title as Cheddar Gorge, and the medium as oil. The label also records the work as exhibition entry No. 184.

The painting is presented in an attractive white decorative frame and would make a distinctive addition to a contemporary, modern or eclectic interior.

Condition

Good overall vintage condition with some signs of age and handling. The frame has some minor marks and wear consistent with age. The painting itself has strong, textured impasto brushwork and presents beautifully.
