Karl Kreuzberger

A striking and highly atmospheric mid-century abstract composition by Austrian artist Karl Kreuzberger (1916–1990), an artist associated with the Vienna Secession movement.

Executed circa 1955 in Ripolin paint on board, the work features a powerful arrangement of fragmented geometric forms and enigmatic eye motifs rendered in deep blacks, greys, whites and vivid accents of blue and ochre. The painting has a strong modernist presence reminiscent of post-war European abstraction.

Kreuzberger studied at the Vienna Academy between 1935–1939 and later became connected with the influential Vienna Secession circle. This work demonstrates the expressive energy and experimental surface texture associated with mid-century Austrian abstraction.

The painting is monogrammed “K” lower right and is presented in a later black frame that complements the dramatic palette beautifully.
