Attributed to Robert Walker

A charming and characterful tondo portrait of a terrier, attributed to Robert Walker (1599–1658), one of Britain’s most celebrated early animal painters. Executed in oil on Reeves & Sons “Students’ Academy Board”, the painting captures the loyal terrier with remarkable expression, warm colouring and lively brushwork.

The circular composition focuses entirely on the dog’s head and shoulders, emphasising its intelligent gaze and distinctive features against a subdued atmospheric background. The portrait is presented in an impressive decorative gilt swept frame that complements the painting beautifully.

The reverse retains the original Reeves & Sons Ltd., London, England artist’s board label, indicating the work was executed on a high-quality prepared academy board.
