Circle of J.A.A. Wheeler

A charming British sporting equestrian painting attributed to the Circle of John Arnold Alfred Wheeler (1821–1903), depicting a finely painted bay racehorse standing in a stable interior. Executed in oil on board, the horse is shown in profile with excellent anatomical detail and warm chestnut tones, characteristic of the British sporting art tradition.

The work bears a ‘Wheeler’ signature to the lower right and is presented in an attractive decorative period-style frame. A quality piece for collectors of equestrian, racing and country house art.

Condition

Presented in good antique condition.

Condition Report:

The paint surface shows a fine craquelure throughout, with no obvious damage. Examination under UV light shows no evidence of restoration or repair. Removing the board from the frame reveals wear and small losses along the upper edge of the board, hidden when framed. The decorative frame is structurally sound with age-related wear to the finish and a few minor hairline cracks to the moulded decoration.

The painting is ready to hang.
