A charming 19th-century British landscape oil painting on canvas by David Bates (1840–1921), depicting a rural common with sheep grazing in the foreground, a figure walking along the country path, a horse-drawn cart, trees and a distant village beneath a beautifully atmospheric sky.

The painting is signed lower right and is inscribed verso, reading “On Lavern Common”, with the artist’s name noted beneath. The work is presented in an attractive gilt wooden frame, giving it a traditional period appearance.
