Circle of **Eduard von Grützner

An engaging antique genre painting executed in the Circle of Eduard von Grützner (1846–1925), depicting three cheerful monks gathered around a kitchen table in animated conversation. Rich in humour and character, the composition captures the expressive faces and lively interaction for which Grützner’s monastic scenes are celebrated.

The monks are shown enjoying food, drink and conversation within a rustic monastery kitchen, surrounded by traditional pottery, pewter tankards and domestic objects. Warm earthy tones and finely observed facial expressions create a wonderfully atmospheric interior.

Painted in oil on panel, the work is presented in an attractive carved gilt frame under glass. The reverse bears an old label inscribed “Im Klosterkeller” (“In the Monastery Cellar”), adding further period interest.

A charming decorative antique and an excellent addition to collections of German, Austrian or European genre paintings.

Presented in good antique condition overall, displaying age-related wear consistent with its period. Surface craquelure, scattered paint loss and minor abrasions are visible, particularly around the edges and darker passages. The panel remains stable. The decorative frame has age-related wear, losses and rubbing. Glazed. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
