Attributed to William Thomas Roden

An impressive mid-19th-century British portrait depicting Julia Katharine Robinson, née Grant (1817-1892), traditionally attributed to William Thomas Roden (British, 1818-1892) and dating to approximately 1850.

The sitter is portrayed wearing a finely detailed cream dress, dark patterned shawl, cameo brooch and feathered headdress. The painting is presented in an ornate gilt composition frame.

The work appears unsigned. The reverse bears handwritten identification and attribution, together with a label from The Graves Gallery, Fine Art Dealers, 44 Cherry Street, Birmingham.

Condition

The painting displays age-related craquelure, surface marks, small areas of paint loss and evidence of historic restoration or retouching. There is a visible horizontal surface line toward the upper-left area and scattered marks around the sitter’s hair and face.

The ornate frame shows wear, cracking, losses, repairs and areas of later gilding or retouching, particularly around the lower corners. The reverse covering and hanging fittings appear later.
