A charming 19th-century British School portrait depicting a young woman seated against an elegant red draped background, with a peaceful landscape visible in the distance.

The sitter is presented in typical Regency-era fashion, with a softly rendered complexion, period dress and carefully arranged hair. The atmospheric landscape and rich red curtain create a striking contrast and add considerable depth to the composition.

The painting is executed in oil on panel and is unsigned. The reverse bears a handwritten pencil inscription reading “Osborne or Gilroy family”, suggesting a possible family provenance or identification of the sitter, although this cannot be independently confirmed.

The portrait is housed in an impressive giltwood frame with moulded floral and foliate decoration. The frame has beautiful decorative detail and strong period character.

Condition

The painting is offered in antique condition, with age-related wear, surface marks and craquelure consistent with its age. There is evidence of a repair/restoration to the panel, as visible in the photographs.

The ornate gilt frame has damage, losses and areas of wear to the gilded surface, commensurate with age. Despite this, it remains highly decorative and presents the painting beautifully.
