G. F. Waldo Johnson

A beautifully observed late Victorian portrait by G. F. Waldo Johnson, depicting an elegant young lady wearing a high-collared white dress.

The sitter is shown against a rich blue-green background, her composed expression and direct gaze giving the portrait a strong and engaging presence. The artist has paid particular attention to the delicate modelling of the face, the blue-grey eyes and the folds and textures of the lady’s formal period dress.

The painting is signed and dated 1890 to the upper right and is executed in oil on millboard. It is presented in a substantial and highly decorative gilt frame, which complements the refined Victorian character of the work.

The portrait has particularly interesting provenance, having been consigned through a deceased estate belonging to descendants of the artist.

An attractive and historically interesting example of British Victorian portraiture, suitable for a traditional interior, period collection or gallery wall.

Condition Report

The painting is in antique condition with age-related craquelure, surface marks and general wear visible on close inspection. There are some fine surface cracks and minor imperfections consistent with the age of the work.
