Portrait of Mikoláš Aleš – Oil on Panel

A striking early-to-mid 20th-century portrait by Jaroslav Hasa (1890–1968), depicting the celebrated Czech painter and illustrator Mikoláš Aleš (1852–1913).

The portrait shows Aleš in a contemplative pose, with particular attention to his expressive face, white beard and strong character. The warm, dark tonal palette gives the work a traditional and atmospheric quality.

The painting is signed and is particularly interesting for the inscription on the reverse, which identifies the sitter as:

“Mikoláš Aleš … veliký malíř český 1852–1913”

(“Mikoláš Aleš … great Czech painter 1852–1913”).

The reverse is also signed Jaroslav Hasa.

Presented in an impressive ornate carved and gilded-style antique frame, which complements the character of the portrait beautifully.

Condition

The painting is in used antique/vintage condition, with signs of age and wear consistent with its period. There are surface marks, craquelure/age-related characteristics and areas of wear visible in the photographs. The ornate frame also shows age-related wear, knocks, losses and patination.
