An impressive antique wooded landscape painting by Carl Eduard Onken (German, 1846-1934).

The atmospheric composition depicts a peaceful rural landscape with mature trees, open countryside and several figures walking and resting beside a winding path. A distant settlement and hills can be seen beneath an expansive cloudy sky.

The painting is signed “E. Onken” to the lower-left corner and is presented in a vintage painted wooden frame with gilt detailing.

A highly decorative original work, ideal for collectors of German art, European landscape painting and traditional country-house interiors.

Condition

Antique condition with age-related wear.

The painted surface displays extensive craquelure, surface marks, small dark spots and general ageing throughout. There are visible scratches and areas of surface wear, particularly within the darker landscape sections. The frame has paint loss, chips, rubbing, scratches and general wear consistent with age.

The painting has not been professionally cleaned or restored by us. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

The rear has an older canvas backing and hanging wire.
