Description
An atmospheric and finely executed antique oil painting by noted Canadian-American artist Townley Benson, titled A Mexican Township, signed and dated 1899.
This beautiful late 19th-century landscape depicts a white-walled Mexican settlement set against dramatic mountain scenery, with charming foreground details including rustic huts, reeds, and a lone figure carrying goods across the plain. The warm desert palette and soft light are highly characteristic of Benson’s sought-after Southwestern and Californian scenes.
Benson, originally from Canada, became known for his evocative paintings of Southern California and Mexico after relocating following a family tragedy. His life ended tragically when he was reportedly shot by revolutionaries while painting at his easel in Mexico.
The work is oil on canvas and comes in an impressive ornate gilt frame that complements the period perfectly
