Gerald Maurice Burn

An excellent and historically interesting marine painting by Gerald Maurice Burn (1862–1945), depicting H.M.S. Phoenix at sea on 8th January 1916 during the First World War. Executed in oil on canvas board, the work is signed and dated “G. Burn 1916” lower left and retains informative labels verso identifying the subject and artist.

Burn was particularly well known for his maritime paintings, having trained at South Kensington and worked extensively throughout Europe. His detailed depictions of naval vessels make his works highly sought after by collectors of British marine art and military history.

The painting captures H.M.S. Phoenix under steam with dramatic skies and beautifully handled light reflecting across the water, demonstrating Burn’s confident brushwork and atmospheric style.

The painting is in very good antique condition with light age-related wear. Signed lower left. The frame displays minor wear, marks and small losses consistent with age but presents well. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
