James Herbert Snell ROI

A charming and highly collectable original oil on canvas by the celebrated British landscape painter James Herbert Snell ROI (1861–1935), depicting “Grey Street, Killin”, one of Scotland’s most picturesque Highland villages.

The painting beautifully captures the peaceful atmosphere of rural Perthshire, with whitewashed cottages, villagers conversing beside a country lane, and mature trees beneath an expansive sky. Snell’s delicate brushwork, subtle palette, and superb handling of light make this a wonderful example of his Scottish landscapes.

The work is signed lower right and inscribed “Grey Street, Killin” on the reverse.

James Herbert Snell studied at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art before continuing his training in Paris and Amsterdam. He became a prolific and respected landscape painter, exhibiting extensively at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), Royal Scottish Academy and Paris Salon. His works are represented in public collections and remain highly sought after by collectors of British landscape painting.

Condition Report

The painting is in very good antique condition with light age-related wear consistent with its age. The paint surface is stable with attractive original craquelure and good colour throughout.

The ornate antique gilt frame displays age-related wear, including surface cracks, losses and old repairs, all visible in the photographs. The frame is included as a complimentary item and has not been restored.
